My name is Aaron Wingert. Born, raised and currently residing in northeast Kansas, I am fortunate to have spent a good amount of time in the outdoors. For much of my life my love of the outdoors paralleled my woodworking hobby. In 2008 the two came crashing together when, unsatisfied with the workmanship of even the most expensive turkey calls from large outdoor retailers, I started making turkey calls. Since then, I have hundreds of calls in turkey vests and on waterfowlers' lanyards throughout America, Canada and Europe. In the last several years I have focused on making the finest duck whistles available anywhere and have shifted away from making turkey calls.
Call making is something that I do in my spare time. Each and every call I make is custom made for the person that ordered it...I do not have calls ready to go...No inventory. I try to keep my waiting list fairly short compared to the 2-3 year waiting list I used to have. In 2023 and into 2024, my waiting list has only been 4 months or so. My family is my first priority. If I were able to spend five hours per night in the shop, the waiting time would be considerably less, but that's just not the case.
I firmly believe that in order for a call to be custom, the buyer must be part of the process. They must provide input on how their call will look, and I hope that involvement makes my customers feel that they had a hand in the process. When their turn comes up my customers often have the opportunity to see pictures of specific wood blanks to choose from. I've been known to text message pictures of calls as they're in the progress of being built when the customer wants to see their call come together. Just say so!
One of the most enjoyable parts of custom call making for me is getting to know the people who I'm building calls for. Nothing is more rewarding than being a small part of their time afield.
I am a proud husband to an awesome wife and father of twin fifteen year-old boys who are my pride and joy, not to mention a load of work and excitement. For almost sixteen years I worked as a multi-disciplinary building inspector for a large Kansas City area municipality's fire department, and also served as Chief Inspector for another jurisdiction. I am now a QAQC Manager for McCownGordon Construction, a large commercial general contractor in Kansas City. I went to college in southeast Kansas at Pittsburg State University and earned a bachelor's degree in Construction Management. I truly enjoy hunting waterfowl, turkey and pheasant. I am an avid fly fisherman, but I often tell people that Kansas is purgatory for trout fishermen. I frequently visit southern MO for trout excursions and visit the Rocky Mountains whenever possible. I grew up bow hunting and shooting archery competitively. As a teenager, I won NFAA indoor nationals in my division....Ah, the glory days when I had the time and dedication to shoot a lot. I've recently picked 3D archery back up and dove back into shooting (albeit not very competitively) after a hiatus of over a decade.
I have learned much about what I know about call making from trial and error. I definitely did not enjoy overnight success and each step in the right direction has been paved with the wood shavings from calls that weren't perfect. Every day in the shop is a learning experience and I hope that never changes, as I continually strive to get better at what I do. Nothing short of perfection will ever leave my shop. I have also learned an incredible amount from my peers in the custom call making community, and I try to help other call makers in the same way. I have the honor and privilege of serving as a moderator on the Call Lounge page on Facebook. I have enjoyed forging friendships with countless call makers across the country.
I don't have promotional staff. I don't advertise much or do sponsorships very often. You probably won't see my booth at the next big hunting show. I want to keep my busy little business small. Any charitable donation calls I do tend to be directed toward causes that directly benefit those serving in the military and military veterans. The fact that most of my business comes from customer referrals, and the praise of someone that loves what I made for them is the highest form of validation for me.
Thank you for visiting my site and letting me share my passion for finely crafted calls with you. Please see the contact/order page if you are interested in having a call made or if you have any questions.
